Can You Have an STI without Symptoms?

By Adrienne Ton, NP

TL; DR: Yes, you can absolutely have an STI/STD without symptoms. That’s why regular screening and safe sex measures like condoms are important to maintain your sexual and reproductive health.

When we offer patient’s screening for sexually transmitted infections, people will often say something along the lines of “No, I don’t have any symptoms, I don’t think I need it” or “I’m usually pretty safe so I think it’s fine”.

STIs are more common than many people think. According to the World Health Organization, over 1 million STIs are found every day around the world and the majority of those people do not have symptoms (1). This does not mean that you should stop having sex. It just means that you should try to know your status and your partner(s), because STI's are not always as obvious as you might think.

Reasons why you should get screened for STIs, even if you don’t have symptoms:

TBD Recommends: 5-Panel STD Test

Finding an STI early on can help prevent problems before they arise. Regular STI screening is testing for infections before you have symptoms. Screening helps to catch an infection early and treat it before it causes issues later on.

TBD Recommends: Take our sexual health questionnaire

There are a lot of ways that STIs can hide, but there are also a lot of ways that you can help protect yourself and your health. Safe sex practices like condoms and regular STI screenings are some of the most powerful tools we have to help prevent STIs.
