### Article: Why Certain STIs Make Me More Susceptible to HIV
*By Sarah McElroy, NP & Adrienne Ton, NP*

So maybe you’re here because you got tested and then treated for chlamydia, and then you went into a deep dark hole of Google and found out that STIs increase your chances of getting HIV. _Deep breaths._

**Here are the facts:** Having any STI increases your chances of contracting HIV because having sex means you’re more at risk for sexually-transmitted infections.

HIV is a virus passed from partner to partner through various fluids, such as blood, semen, rectal fluids, and vaginal fluids during sexual activity, or from sharing needles.

HIV transmission can occur via vaginal or anal sex, as the friction during sex can cause small tears in the mucosal lining, allowing HIV to enter the body if latex condoms aren’t used. The inflammation caused by STIs like gonorrhea and chlamydia can increase the likelihood of these tears occurring.

It's similar to if you tripped and scraped your knee, making it more susceptible to infections. In a comparable manner, STIs can create conditions in which HIV can enter the body more easily.

If you test positive for one STI, it is advisable to get a full panel (like [TBD's 9-Panel kit](https://www.tbd.health/products/the-mvp)) including an HIV test.
